The Magic of Recovery Motivation
If you're going to do something anyway, you might as well have fun with it, right?
Well, that's certainly the view of Kevin Spencer, professor of occupational therapy and master illusionist.
WCAX.com reports that Kevin is using his magic skills to help injured patients get better, and he's teaching therapists how magic can help improve a patient's therapy. Magic could be the motivation your patients need to speed up their recovery.
Kevin Spencer takes his magic show on the road in an effort to teach physical therapists how to use magic to help brain trauma patients regain lost motor skills. You see, Kevin knows firsthand what it's like to face the long and uphill battle of rehab. He was in a near fatal car accident himself, ending up in intensive care with a closed head and spinal cord injury. He spent a year in physical therapy.
Not only is the recovery process physically challenging for the patient - but it's also hard to stay motivated. In fact, it's that motivation that plays a key part in how fast or how long the recovery process will take.
Enter Kevin's magic....
Kevin believes it's magic that can provide the added excitement, challenge, learning, and simple fun that spurs a patient on in their rehab. That's why Kevin tours the country teaching physical therapists how to add magic to their rehabilitation tool box. By learning some simple tricks with ropes, scarves, and wands, therapists can teach their patients these same tricks - and, in the process, help these patients regain the hand-eye coordination and motor skills they've lost due to injury.
"The magic and the traditional forms (of rehab) work together to accomplish the same goal. In my opinion, one of them is just a lot more fun," says Kevin. "The real magic is definitely how quickly they get well."
